Don’t Let the Grinch Steal Your Smile!

The simplest way to avoid cavities and tooth problems during the holiday season is to limit your sugar intake, but come on! Who are we kidding?! The candy yams Aunt Sally made especially for you and the candy canes we stir our hot chocolate with, oh and don’t forget the gingerbread. ‘Tis the season to indulge!

Out of habit, you should already be brushing your teeth twice a day, rinsing with fluoride, and not forgetting to floss. It is especially important during the holidays not to pass up having a routine for teeth cleaning every six months. Caught early on issues are typically quick and easy to treat, but plaque can build up on all the surfaces of the teeth that can cause decay or infection. Besides, bright smiles make for the best holiday selfies!

So, here are some tips to help you get through this sweet holiday season.

  • Limit your sugar intake. Set goals for when you will indulge and when you won’t. You might find that Christmas day and New Year’s Eve will be your indulgence days. Or perhaps at the Company Christmas Party and Christmas Eve. If you set goals, you will be more likely to stick with them.
  • Avoid sticky candies like candy canes. Sticky sweets stay longer on your teeth causing damage longer. These types of candies can cause more damage to your current dental work.
  • Drink lots of water! Drinking water can help you feel full faster and will also rinse away some sugars as you eat and drink. Rinsing with water is a great option if you can not brush until later. Remember coffee and red wines stain teeth and are full of harmful acids to your teeth. Apple cider and Eggnog have over 5 teaspoons up to 16 teaspoons of sugar per cup. Choose your holiday drinks wisely.
